Hair oiling: myths and facts

The short answer

Hair oiling can protect the hair shaft, reduce breakage and make hair feel softer. Coconut oil in particular has lab evidence for reducing protein loss from hair. But oil does not reach or change the follicle in a way that stops pattern hair loss or regrows lost hair. Enjoy your champi as hair care, and treat hair loss separately.

Key takeaways

  • Oil works on the hair shaft (the part you can see), not the root. It helps with dryness and breakage, not with true hair loss.
  • Coconut oil has the most evidence for protecting hair, because it can penetrate the shaft and reduce protein loss during washing.
  • Rosemary oil has one small trial in pattern hair loss with results similar to 2% minoxidil. Interesting, but far from proven.
  • Leaving heavy oil on an oily, flaky scalp overnight can make dandruff and seborrhoeic dermatitis worse.
  • Oiling before a medicated lotion can stop it reaching the scalp. Ask your doctor how to combine the two.

Why do we oil our hair in the first place?

In most Indian homes, oiling is simply part of growing up. The Sunday champi from your mother or grandmother, coconut oil on the coast, mustard oil in the north, and bottles of amla, bhringraj or herbal blends on every dressing table. A 2022 review in the International Journal of Trichology, "Hair Oils: Indigenous Knowledge Revisited", notes that hair oils have been used for centuries and are cheap and accessible, but their exact effects on hair and scalp remain unclear. Their main job is as an emollient. They soften and coat the hair.

That is a real benefit, and I am not here to take your champi away. It is just not the same thing as treating hair loss.

Myths and facts at a glance

Common belief What the evidence says
Oiling stops hair fall It can reduce breakage of the lengths. It does not stop shedding from the root or pattern hair loss.
Oil "nourishes" the root The follicle sits several millimetres below the skin and gets nutrients from the blood, not from oil on the surface.
Coconut oil is good for hair Lab studies show it reduces protein loss from hair when used before and after washing.
Castor oil grows thick hair No good clinical trials show this. It is very thick and has been reported to cause sudden matting of long hair.
Rosemary oil works like minoxidil One small 2015 trial found similar hair counts to 2% minoxidil at six months. One trial is not enough to rely on.
Onion juice regrows hair A small 2002 study tested it in patchy hair loss (alopecia areata), not in pattern hair loss.
More oil, longer, is better Overnight heavy oiling can worsen dandruff and leave you needing harsh shampoo to remove it.

What does coconut oil actually do?

A frequently cited study by Rele and Mohile compared coconut, sunflower and mineral oil on hair. Coconut oil was the only one that markedly reduced protein loss from both undamaged and damaged hair when used before and after washing. The authors put this down to its structure. It is rich in lauric acid, which has an affinity for hair protein, and it has a small, straight molecule that can enter the hair shaft. Mineral oil and sunflower oil did not reduce protein loss.

So in practice, coconut oil on the lengths 30 minutes to an hour before washing can help hair that is dry, chemically treated or prone to breaking. It is a hair-care step. It will not thicken a thinning crown, and I would rather you know that now than in a year.

Is the champi itself helpful?

Honestly, the massage may matter more than the oil. A small Japanese study had nine men use a scalp massage device for four minutes a day for 24 weeks, and found a small increase in hair thickness. Nine people and no control group is weak evidence, so take it as a pleasant bonus, not a treatment. A gentle massage with the fingertips is fine. Vigorous rubbing, pulling or knotting the hair while oiling is not, because that breaks hair.

What about castor, rosemary, onion and other "growth" oils?

  • Castor oil. A 2026 narrative review in Cureus says castor oil may improve shine and raises a possible mechanism in pattern hair loss, but calls for clinical studies to establish efficacy. It is also very thick. A case report in the International Journal of Trichology describes sudden, irreversible matting of a patient's entire long hair after washing with coconut and castor oil. The hair had to be cut off.
  • Rosemary oil. In a 2015 randomised trial, 50 people used rosemary oil and 50 used 2% minoxidil for six months. Both groups had more hair at six months, with no significant difference between them, and itching was more common with minoxidil. It is one trial, and 2% is the weaker strength of minoxidil. Essential oils must be diluted, and they can irritate the scalp.
  • Onion juice. The study people quote was in alopecia areata, an autoimmune patchy hair loss, compared with tap water. It was small, and it does not apply to pattern hair loss. Raw onion can also irritate the skin.
  • Amla, bhringraj and herbal blends. Widely used, but good human trials for hair loss are lacking. As a hair-care habit they are usually safe, if your scalp tolerates them.

When can oiling make things worse?

See, what happens is, the yeast linked to dandruff, Malassezia, uses scalp oils as food. Some people with an oily, flaky scalp find their dandruff gets worse with frequent overnight oiling, especially in Mumbai's humid monsoon months. Other times to be careful:

  • On a red, itchy or inflamed scalp, until it has been treated. See dandruff and hair fall.
  • Before a medicated scalp lotion. Oil can form a layer that stops the medicine reaching the skin. Apply the medicine to a clean, dry scalp and keep the oil for the lengths, or oil only on the night before hair wash, as your doctor advises.
  • When the oil needs repeated harsh washing to remove. Two or three rounds of strong shampoo can dry the hair more than the oil helped.
  • With acne on the forehead or back, where oil running down from the hair can block pores.

So how should I oil, if I enjoy it?

  1. Choose a plain oil you like. Coconut oil has the most evidence for the hair shaft.
  2. Warm it slightly, never hot.
  3. Apply mainly to the lengths and ends. Keep the scalp light if it is oily or flaky.
  4. Massage gently with your fingertips for a few minutes.
  5. Wash it off after 30 minutes to a few hours with a mild shampoo, rather than leaving it for days.

If your hair fall is increasing despite oiling, changing to a different oil is unlikely to fix it. The causes worth checking are explained in will my hair grow back?.

How we approach this at Dr Tvacha

I do not ask anyone to give up a family habit they enjoy. At a hair diagnosis I look at the scalp and hair, check whether oiling is helping or aggravating the scalp, and separate breakage from true hair loss. If treatment is needed, I explain how to fit oiling around it. Whether you keep oiling is your call. The hair plan page explains how the Rs 499 diagnosis works at our Thane, Andheri, Bandra and Dahisar centres.

Frequently asked questions

Does hair oil stop hair fall?

Oil can reduce breakage of the lengths, so you may see fewer broken hairs in your comb. It does not stop shedding from the root, hair fall after illness, or pattern hair loss, because it does not change the follicle. If you are losing full-length hairs for more than six to eight weeks, or your parting is widening, look for the cause instead of switching oils.

Should I oil my hair before or after washing?

Before. Lab studies on coconut oil show benefit when it is applied as a pre-wash treatment, which helps protect the hair from protein loss during washing. Thirty minutes to a few hours is enough. A few drops on the ends after washing can reduce frizz, especially in humid weather. Long overnight oiling is not necessary and can aggravate an oily scalp.

Is it bad to leave oil in hair overnight?

For many people it is harmless. But if you have dandruff, seborrhoeic dermatitis or acne along the hairline, overnight oil can make these worse. It also means more shampoo to remove it, which can dry the hair. Normally I suggest that if your scalp gets itchy or flaky after oiling, you shorten the time or keep the oil to the lengths only.

Can I use rosemary oil instead of minoxidil?

The evidence is one randomised trial of 100 people comparing rosemary oil with 2% minoxidil over six months. Results were similar, but one study is not enough, and the stronger 5% minoxidil was not tested. Rosemary essential oil must be diluted and can irritate the scalp. Any treatment for pattern hair loss is best chosen after a proper diagnosis.

Can I oil my hair while using a prescribed scalp lotion?

Usually yes, it is a matter of timing. Apply the lotion to a clean, dry scalp so it can be absorbed, and keep oil away from the scalp at that time. Many people oil the lengths before hair wash and apply the medicine once the hair is dry. Ask your doctor for a routine that suits your prescription.
