What to do and avoid after a chemical peel

The short answer

After a chemical peel, keep the skin clean, cool and moisturised, protect it strictly from the sun, and let it peel on its own. Use a mild cleanser, a bland moisturiser and a mineral sunscreen. Avoid picking, scrubs, retinoids, acids, waxing and steam until the skin settles, usually a few days to a week after superficial peels.

Key takeaways

  • Do not pick or pull peeling skin. Picking can cause infection, dark marks and scarring.
  • Sun protection after a peel is not optional, especially for brown skin, which darkens easily after any injury.
  • Keep your routine bland for a few days: gentle cleanser, plain moisturiser, sunscreen.
  • Pause active ingredients, scrubs, waxing, threading near the area and steam until your doctor says to restart.
  • Call your doctor if you have burning, swelling, blisters, oozing, crusting or itching that gets worse.

Why does aftercare matter so much in Indian skin?

That is very important to understand. A peel is a controlled injury. The result depends partly on what was done in the clinic, and partly on what you do in the next week.

Brown skin responds to injury by making pigment. If freshly peeled skin is exposed to sun, rubbed or irritated, it can darken instead of brighten. The Indian guidelines on chemical peels list post-inflammatory pigmentation as the main complication, and DermNet notes blotchy pigmentation is more likely in darker skin. Good aftercare is how we prevent that.

What should I expect after a peel?

The Indian guidelines describe swelling, redness and peeling after a peel, lasting about one to three days for superficial peels and five to ten days for deeper ones.

Day Superficial peel, what is normal
Day 0 Warmth, mild redness, a tight feeling
Days 1 to 2 Tightness, dryness, possibly light flaking
Days 3 to 5 Fine peeling, often around the mouth and nose first
Days 5 to 7 Skin settles; fresh, slightly sensitive skin underneath

Some people barely peel at all, and that does not mean the peel did not work. DermNet notes the first superficial peel may show little visible effect.

What should I do after a chemical peel?

Cleansing - Wash with lukewarm water and a mild, soap-free cleanser, using your fingertips only. - Pat dry with a soft, clean towel. Do not rub.

Moisturising - Use a plain, fragrance-free moisturiser two or three times a day, or whenever the skin feels tight. DermNet suggests a light moisturiser after superficial peels and a thicker one after deeper peels. - The American Academy of Dermatology notes that keeping skin moisturised matters, because dryness and cracking can lead to scarring.

Soothing - Cool compresses or a cool water spray help if the skin feels warm. The Indian guidelines also mention calamine lotion for soothing. - A fan is fine; ice directly on the skin is not.

Sun protection - Apply a broad-spectrum mineral sunscreen every morning, and reapply if you go out. The Indian Sunscreen Forum's 2025 consensus recommends mineral sunscreens after procedures. - Wear a cap and use an umbrella. Avoid long periods in direct sun for the first week. - After a medium peel, the American Academy of Dermatology advises avoiding the sun completely until healed.

What should I avoid after a peel?

See, what happens is, freshly peeled skin has a thinner protective layer. Things your skin normally tolerates can sting or inflame it for a few days.

  • Picking, pulling or scratching flakes. The American Academy of Dermatology warns this can cause infection, and DermNet notes picking can cause scarring. Trim a loose flake with clean scissors if it really bothers you.
  • Scrubs, loofahs, face brushes and towels rubbed on the face.
  • Retinoids, acids (glycolic, salicylic, lactic), vitamin C and benzoyl peroxide for about a week, or until I tell you to restart.
  • Waxing, threading and bleaching on or near the treated area until it has fully settled.
  • Steam, sauna, hot yoga and very hot showers for a few days. Heat increases redness.
  • Swimming pools for a few days; chlorine irritates.
  • Heavy, oily creams if you are acne-prone. DermNet notes thick moisturisers can trigger breakouts after peels.
  • Home remedies. No lemon, haldi, multani mitti or homemade packs on healing skin.
  • Makeup until the skin settles, especially if it stings. The American Academy of Dermatology advises not applying makeup before the skin heals after medium and deeper peels. After a superficial peel, DermNet says makeup can usually go on after a few hours; I prefer you keep it light for a day or two.

Can I go to work or exercise after a peel?

  • Work: usually yes, after a superficial peel. The redness is often mild and settles within a day or two.
  • Exercise: light walking is fine. I suggest avoiding intense, sweaty workouts for a day or two, because sweat and heat can sting and redden the skin.
  • Commute: in Mumbai, sunscreen, a cap and an umbrella are part of the aftercare, not an extra.

When should I call my doctor?

Contact your doctor if you notice: - Burning, itching or swelling that is getting worse, which the American Academy of Dermatology specifically mentions as a reason to call - Blisters, oozing, yellow crusts or pus, which can mean infection - Small painful blisters around the lips, which may be a cold sore flare - Dark patches developing in the treated area - Redness lasting more than a couple of weeks; the Indian guidelines note erythema lasting over three weeks can suggest early scarring

Basically, if it is getting worse instead of better after day three, call.

Frequently asked questions

When can I restart my retinoid after a chemical peel?

Normally after about a week, once peeling has stopped and the skin no longer stings. Restart slowly, every second or third night, then build back up. Restarting too early can cause irritation and darkening in brown skin. Your doctor may give a specific date depending on the depth of peel and how your skin reacts.

Why is my skin not peeling after a chemical peel?

Many superficial peels cause little or no visible peeling, and that is normal. The acid still loosens surface cells, which shed in a fine, invisible way. The benefit of superficial peels builds over a series of sessions. Visible peeling is not a measure of how well the peel worked.

Can I apply aloe vera after a chemical peel?

Pure, fragrance-free aloe vera gel is usually soothing, but products labelled aloe often contain fragrance, alcohol or other additives that can sting freshly peeled skin. A plain, fragrance-free moisturiser recommended by your doctor is the safer choice. If you want to use aloe, patch test on a small area first.

What happens if I go in the sun after a chemical peel?

Freshly peeled skin is more sensitive to UV and visible light, and brown skin tends to darken after any injury. Sun exposure in the first week can cause redness and patchy pigmentation that may take months to fade. Daily mineral sunscreen, reapplied outdoors, a cap and an umbrella greatly lower that risk.
